that cover the full spectrum of conditions affecting the health
of mothers and their fetuses.
The following programs are highlighted from our broad range of
services:
High-Risk Pregnancy Evaluation and Consultation Service: Consultation
is provided for patients with high-risk pregnancies who will deliver
at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital or any of more than seven
hospitals throughout central and southern New Jersey. The patient's
private physician appreciates having a highly expert backup available.
The resulting collaborative co-management of patients provides continuity
of care throughout pregnancy.
24-Hour, High-Risk Specialist Coverage: A high-risk specialist
clinician is available around the clock to consult on and care for
all obstetric patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital,
receive maternal transports to our Regional Perinatal Center, and
provide consultations 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Antenatal Testing Unit: The Antenatal Testing Unit (ATU)
is located at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. In addition,
12 sonographers cover 7 examination rooms equipped with state of
the art ultrasound machines with color flow Doppler and 3D/4D capabilities.
Approximately 20,000 fetal ultrasound examinations are performed
each year with a significant portion of the examinations performed
on patients referred from regional hospitals and physicians. A variety
of fetal procedures are also carried out including targeted sonography
to assess fetal anomalies, non-stress tests, biophysical profiles,
Doppler velocimetry, fetal echocardiography, percutaneous umbilical
blood samplings, chorionic villus samplings, amniocenteses, and
percutaneous fetal surgery (including laser fetoscopy).
Fetal Cardiovascular Service: Our specialists in Maternal-Fetal
Medicine also work with pediatric cardiologists to identify fetal
cardiovascular disease, the most common congenital fetal anomaly.
By performing and evaluating highly sophisticated ultrasound images
and Doppler measurements, the multidisciplinary team can uncover
70% to 80% of major fetal cardiovascular anomalies.
Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Evaluation Service: This is a comprehensive
program designed to meet the needs of women who have experienced
pregnancy loss. This service brings together specialists from several
areas to give a comprehensive approach to the problem of recurrent
pregnancy loss.
Genetic Sonogram Service: The Division of Maternal/Fetal
Medicine is one of the few facilities in the United States to apply
ultrasound to adjust the risk for fetal Down syndrome. Many regional
hospitals and physicians refer patients for this service. The program
is appropriate for women whose physicians have recommended amniocentesis
but who are reluctant to undergo the procedure for fear of fetal
loss or because they want more information first.
First Trimester Genetic/Aneuploidy Screening: This
is an innovative program using both ultrasound and blood tests to
provide information to parents very early in pregnancy about their
risk to have a fetus affected by genetic gonditions such as Down
syndrome and Trisomy 18. The first program in the area to offer
this service, First Trimester Aneuploidy Screening offers the opportunity
to obtain information about genetic risks before the end of the
first trimester.
Preterm Birth Evaluation and Prevention Service: This is
a comprehensive program designed to evaluate women who have experienced
previous preterm birth. This service brings together specialists
from several areas to give a comprehensive approach to the problem
of preterm birth.
