Post-Mastectomy Radiation is Underutilized as a Treatment Method in 
Older Breast Cancer Patients 
Study shows there could be a benefit for those at highest risk

San Antonio, Texas, December 18, 2006 –   During a poster session this past weekend at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, Dr. Bruce G. Haffty, Associate Director and Chair of Radiation Oncology at The Cancer Institute of New Jersey and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, along with colleagues from other institutions presented data that shows post-mastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT), although associated with improved survival in high risk women, is relatively underutilized. The study is an updated analysis of a recent study published by the same group, with additional demographic data (Smith B, Haffty B et al. Journal of Clinical Oncology, Vol 24, No 30, October 20, 2006: pp. 4901-4907). more...

New Brunswick – The Alumni Association Board of Trustees of UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) awarded $200,000 in contributions to RWJMS for the 2006-07 academic year. Scholarships and low-interest loans totaling $175,000 were awarded to students. UMDNJ Researcher Receives Grant from Leukemia Research Foundation

$100K award in one of largest in Foundation’s history

(NEW BRUNSWICK) – Dr. Chih-Cheng Tsai, an assistant professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has been named the recipient of a one-year, $100,000 research grant from the Leukemia Research Foundation.  The $100,000 grant is the largest ever offered by the Foundation and is one of seven grants of that amount awarded as part of the Foundation’s 2006/2007 funding of blood cancer research at institutions from across the United States. more...

SimBaby Arrives on Medical School Campus

Christine W. Hunter, MD, associate professor and chair, Department of Anesthesiology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, is pleased to announce the recent arrival of SimBaby, the newest member of the simulator family. Weighing 21 pounds, and measuring 27.5 inches, the infant mannequin realistically simulates the anatomy and physiological responses of a child three months to two years old.
“Simulation studies are an important addition to the medical curriculum,” explains Christine Hunter, chair of Department of Anesthesiology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. “The life-like mannequins help residents as well as medical students improve competency training and critical thinking skills.” more...

Governor Jon S. Corzine held a Town Hall meeting at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School’s Piscataway campus on Thursday, March 2. Governor Corzine introduced Bruce C. Vladeck, PhD, interim president of UMDNJ and expressed his support for the university to the standing-room only crowd. The main auditorium held over 350 faculty members, students and staff.
