Director of Radiation Oncology and Associate Director, The Cancer Institute of New Jersey
Bruce G. Haffty, MD, has been named professor and chair of the Department
of Radiation Oncology, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, and appointed
director of Radiation Oncology and associate director, The Cancer Institute of New
Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer
Center.
Most recently, Dr. Haffty was professor, vice chairman and clinical director,
Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Yale School of Medicine and Yale-New Haven
Hospital. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Massachusetts
and a master’s degree in biomedical engineering from Worcester Polytechnic
Institute. His medical school training was completed at Yale School of Medicine,
followed by an internship in internal medicine, residency and chief residency in the
Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Yale School of Medicine, Yale-New Haven
Hospital.
Since the completion of his residency, Dr. Haffty has been at Yale School of
Medicine, Department of Therapeutic Radiology, where he served as residency program director from 1992 through 2004. He also served as president of the Association
of Directors of Radiation Oncology Programs from 2000 to 2003, and currently sits on
the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education residency review committee
for radiation oncology.
Dr. Haffty’s clinical areas of expertise include breast cancer, and head and neck
cancer. He has had numerous research grants and conducts clinical and translational
research in his chosen areas of expertise. In 2005, Dr. Haffty was named a Top Doctor
in New York magazine, and included in Top Cancer Doctors in America and in
America’s Top Doctors, both published by Castle Connolly. Best Doctor’s in America,
Ladies Home Journal, Redbook and Good Housekeeping also have listed Dr. Haffty as
one of the country’s top physicians.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Haffty has served on numerous national
committees related to research and education in radiation oncology. He serves on the editorial boards of 10 medical journals, and has mentored many medical students,
trainees and junior faculty in conducting clinical and translational research.
He currently serves as co-editor of The Cancer Journal, and has recently been appointed as
one of the radiation oncology trustees to the American Board of Radiology.
