First comprehensive Pelvic PROGRAM in New Jersey opens at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School
New Brunswick, N.J. – Men and women in need of care for pelvic-related problems usually have to visit several doctors across multiple disciplines to get the full range of treatment they require. But now these patients can receive comprehensive care all in one place.
The Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program on the Robert Wood Johnson Academic Health Campus in New Brunswick recently opened and offers a broad range of treatment options for patients. The all-inclusive program combines the diagnostic and treatment expertise of urologists, urogynecologists, colorectal surgeons and physical therapists.
“Our multidisciplinary approach to restoring full pelvic function for men and women is comprehensive and novel in that ours is one of very few such centers in the country,” said Juana Hutchinson-Colas, M.D., a ssistant p rofessor of o bstetrics and g ynecology at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program treats conditions including pelvic organ prolapse, incontinence, erectile dysfunction, constipation, and recto-vaginal and vesico-vaginal fistulas. “We offer the full scope of treatment options, whether the solution is as simple as diet and exercise adjustments, or a surgical procedure. When a patient needs an operation, we use the latest and most minimally invasive techniques available such as robotic surgery, laparoscopy and suburethral slings.”
In addition, The Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program has a staff of licensed physical therapists that collaborate with the physicians on treatment options for patients. “Physical therapy is an essential component of care for managing these patients,” added Dr. Hutchinson-Colas. “The restorative techniques we use include biofeedback, electrical stimulation to strengthen very weak muscles, therapeutic exercises and more.”
The Pelvic Floor and Incontinence Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital is located on the fourth floor of the Clinical Academic Building (CAB) at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at 125 Paterson St. Physicians are on site from 8 a.m. to noon on Mondays to consult with and examine patients, as well as review complex medical cases.
