The value of disease registries
lies in the completeness of the collected data (Ingelfinger 2004).
Controlled clinical trials have strict rules for admission, studying
only a small percent of patients, and cost a lot of money to carry
out. In contrast, research using existing administrative data is
inexpensive in effort and money, and includes whole populations
(Chambless 1997) .
The MIDAS project (as
the New Jersey Myocardial Infarction surveillance System) was initially
funded in 1990 by pilot grants from the State of New Jersey and
the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to use hospital billing administrative
data to explore areas of interest in myocardial infarction epidemiology
and the results were published in Circulation (MIDAS 1). Since then,
MIDAS has been supported by internal funding from the Department
of Medicine and has published 10 papers and presented over 40 abstracts
(see attached publication list).
The MIDAS study group
continues work in the linkage of all cardiovascular disease admissions
and readmissions for subsequent events and invasive cardiology procedures
(e.g. revascularization) in order to construct a longitudinal framework
to characterize the changing trends and natural history of cardiovascular
disease and utilization of invasive cardiology services in New Jersey
.
