It has 507 medical/surgical beds, accredited residency in all specialties and subspecialties, and serves as a tertiary care facility for the 2.8 million people living in central New Jersey. The hospital has an oncology floor with 32 beds, a hematologic malignancy floor with 20 beds and a designated Bone Marrow Transplantation Unit with 12 beds. The adjacent Clinical Academic Building and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey provide extensive ambulatory facilities for hematology and oncology outpatient care. Fellows have direct/primary responsibilities under faculty supervision for all hematology and oncology inpatients, outpatients and consultations of the fulltime faculty of the Divisions of Hematology and Medical Oncology. Special Programs The Peripheral Stem Cell and Marrow Transplant Program is located at RWJUH. Transplantation includes allogeneic and autologous marrow and peripheral stem cell. The New Jersey Regional Hemophilia Program (NJRHP), the program's main comprehensive and diagnostic treatment center for Hemophilia, is located at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Additionally, the NJRHP is the state's tertiary referral facility for all bleeding disorders. The program is one of the largest of its kind in the country and is widely recognized for its clinical and research activities. The Women with Bleeding Disorders Program provides comprehensive diagnostic and management services for gynecological and other bleeding disorders in women. The Transfusion Medicine Program is located at RWJUH. The apheresis service of the Transfusion Program serves central New Jersey. The Thrombosis Center provides tertiary diagnostic and management services for hypercoagulable states. The Regional Comprehensive Sickle Cell Program at RWJMS provides diagnostic and management services for patients with hemoglobinopathies. It is the site for the only transition clinic in the state of New Jersey. Research Laboratories During the entire three-year fellowship training program, the residents are encouraged to participate in clinical research activities of faculty members of the Divisions of Hematology and Medical Oncology. However, depending on the number of fellows and their clinical responsibilities during their third year of training, each subspecialty resident may be assigned to four-six months of "bench" research in a specific area/topic under designated faculty supervision in the Research Laboratories of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, special hematology and hemostasis laboratories and/or the Melvyn H. Motolinsky Laboratory for Hematology Research. The subspecialty residents are expected to discuss their research projects and results during their assigned fellow seminar at the end of their research rotation. At all times, subspecialty residents are actively encouraged to submit completed project abstracts for presentations at national meetings. The residents are provided close supervision and mentorship in the writing of manuscripts and all presentations. It is also the policy of the University that all residents and fellows demonstrate scholarly activity (publishing papers, presenting abstracts, submitting grant or protocol proposals, etc.) before they graduate. Program Eligibility RequirementsThe program receives over 300 applications per year for two to four available positions. Eligibility for applying for admission to the certification examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine at the start of the first year of fellowship (normally completion of three years accredited residency in internal medicine). Acceptance for the second and third years of the program is not automatic but is contingent on satisfactory performance during the first and second years, respectively. Fellowship ACGME Accreditation, Stipends and BenefitsThe hematology/oncology fellowship program was reaccredited in 2007 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was commended for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME's requirements for graduate medical education.
