The Crohn's and Colitis Center (CCC) of New Jersey
has been established under the tutelage of Dr. Kiron M. Das, a renowned
expert in this area for many years. The CCC offers the most up-to-date
diagnostic and therapeutic options in the management of Crohn's Disease
and Ulcerative Colitis, commonly known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease,
or IBD. The Cneter fosters a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive approach
in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative
Colitis, with physicians from various departments, including Medicine,
Surgery, Pediatrics, Radiology, Pathology, Psychiatry, and Nutritional
Service.
The Center provides clinical studies, therapeutic trials wit new drugs,
nutritional and emotional support, service and development of new diagnostic
tests and therapeutic strategies using the latest technology. With institutionally
provided space and support, the Center serves as the focus or hub of clinical
services and educational activities related to IBD. The Center also includes
state-of-the-art laboratories to facilitate the search for understanding
the causes of IBD and to find ways to control its impact on the patient's
life.
DIGESTIVE DISEASE CENTER (DDC)
Director
Kiron M. Das, M.D., Ph.D., F.R.C.P., F.A.C.P.
DDC has 5 full-time, board certified, gastroenterologists with significant
expertise in various GI and liver disorders, and each physician is committed
to providing excellent clinical care to our patients.
A wide spectra of gastrointestinal disorders are treated with state-of-the-art
equipment, and by an interdisciplinary approach. Various programs under
the DDC include:
- Esophagus, Stomach and Colon Cancer Prevention Program
- The Pancreas and Biliary Tract Program
- Swallowing Disorders, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD) and
Peptic Ulcer Program
- The Liver Disease Program
Esophagus, Stomach and Colon Cancer: Screening, Early Diagnosis
and Prevention Program
Gastrointestinal cancers are the second most common cancers in the country.
We offer a comprehensive cancer prevention program by an interdisciplinary
approach, along with our outstanding colleagues from the Cancer Institute
of NJ. We have developed a novel marker ( mAb Das-1 ,
available only at our medical school) to detect those with severe gastroesophageal
reflux (or heartburn) early on, as there can be an increased incidence
in the development of a pre-cancerous condition called Barrett's Esophagus.
Indeed, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus (foodpipe) has the fastest rising
incidence of all carcinomas in the U.S.A. and in Europe.
Our colon cancer prevention program is aimed at education, identification
of risk group, early detection of polyps and appropriate non-surgical
and surgical treatment. We developed a novel marker, TC22 ,
associated with colon polyps and cancer that may be useful for early diagnosis.
We also offer state-of-the-art non-surgical diagnostic procedure, known
as endoscopic ultrasound, to accurately assess the type and extent of
the tumor, obtain a biopsy specimen for proper diagnosis and appropriate
treatment.
Swallowing Disorders, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder (GERD)
and Peptic Ulcer Disease Program
Director: Ellen C. Ebert, M.D.
Besides strong clinical interest and expertise of several faculty members
in these disorders, the division is doing clinical research aimed at appropriate
management of these common upper gastrointestinal problems. Additional
study includes accurate diagnosis of Helicobacter Pylori, the bacteria
shown to be associated with peptic ulcer disease, and institute effective
management.
The Pancreas and Biliary Tract Program
Director: Aram V. Manoukian, M.D.
With the aid of the latest endoscopic technology, we offer endoscopic
management of some forms of gallstone disease and biliary and pancreatic
cancers. In conjunction with our surgical colleagues, we offer laparoscopic
removal of the gallbladder and endoscopic removal of stones from the bile
duct in most cases of gallstone disease with a minimal length of stay
in the hospital and with a faster recovery time. We are also able to diagnose
suspected malignancies of the pancreas and bile ducts, and while we cannot
cure them, in some cases we can offer palliative procedures that can abate
the need for surgery.
The Liver Disease Program
We treat all forms of acute and chronic liver disease. We have a great
deal of experience in the management of Hepatitis B&C, as well as
other forms of chronic liver diseases such as Cirrhosis, toxic chemical
injury to the liver and liver cancer. Several treatment protocols are
available for treating chronic viral hepatitis.
