Fellowship Training

The Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Nutrition offers a two-year fellowship starting July 1 of each year.  Fellows are appointed for one year, with reappointment occurring in July for the following academic year. Currently, the division supports four clinical fellowship positions.

Approximately one-half of fellows' time is spent on patient care responsibilities and the remainder on research and other scholarly activities.  Fellows participate actively in patient evaluation under the direct supervision of the faculty members who personally see every patient and prescribe treatment.  In addition, fellows have the opportunity to take part in both laboratory-based basic scientific research and clinical research programs in the division.

About the Program

The fellowship has the traditional educational, research and patient care components and is supported by the division's fulltime and clinical faculty. Training is based at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, New Jersey, the core clinical teaching site of Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, a major clinical affiliate of RWJMS.

Fellows may participate in research projects related to clinical, basic science or both with any of the fulltime faculty members in the division. Clinical trials sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the pharmaceutical industry are routinely conducted in the division.   Current faculty research interests include:  osteoporosis and other metabolic bone diseases; hyperlipidemia; diabetes and obesity; exercise physiology; and thyroid disorders.

The combination of the clinical activity, academic conferences and presentations and the elective time creates a well-balanced program in which to develop in the field of endocrinology.  Through caring for patients, fellows learn to treat a wide array of disease states, including diabetes, thyroid nodules, cancer, adrenal and pituitary disorders.  In addition to clinical duties, fellows have academic exercises consisting of clinical and basic science journal clubs, clinical case conferences and research meetings.  Teaching medical house staff and students is also an integral part of the fellows' daily routine.

The endocrinology fellowship program was reaccredited in 2007 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was commended for its demonstrated substantial compliance with the ACGME's requirements for graduate medical education.  This program received the maximum length between reaccrediations.  The approximate date of the next ACGME site visit is May 2012.

Stipend and Benefits

As of July 1, 2009, the approximate annual fellowship stipends, plus fringe benefits, are as follows:  PGY 4:  $59,159; and PGY 5:  $60,730.  An increase to $60,934 and $62,552, respectively, will occur at the pay period closest to September 1, 2009.  Explore our Graduate Medical Education website for further information at rwjms2.umdnj.edu/gme .
