Competency Based Curriculum

At RWJMS, we firmly believe that in order to become a successful physician, you must be cognizant of the ethical & social aspects of medicine and knowledgeable about the business aspects of medicine, in addition to understanding the science of medicine. Therefore, our curriculum is divided into three sections: The Science of Medicine, The Art of Medicine and The Business of Medicine.

The Science of Medicine curriculum consists of core clinical topics in the areas of General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Hematology-Oncology, Endocrinology and Infectious Disease.  These talks are delivered on a one year cycle during noon conference at both sites by subspecialty attendings.

The Art of Medicine curriculum encompasses topics in the areas of ethics, communication, cultural and professional dilemmas, and end of life care, among others. The format of the conference consists of open discussions, skits presented by residents, and occasional historical morbidity and mortality presentations about famous people.  The conferences are delivered once a month. Both residents and fellows attend and actively participate.

The Business of Medicine curriculum consists of topics in the areas of healthcare law, coding/billing, managed care, consultations, and logistics of opening a practice, among others.  These talks are delivered once a month by people with expertise in each area and consist of both lectures as well as panel discussions.  The conference is geared towards second and third year residents as well as fellows.
