Night Float Rotations

Long before ACGME required work hour limitations, our program leadership recognized the toll that sleep deprivation and physical exhaustion had on resident learning and patient care. In 1997, a night float system was instituted which remains in place to this day. Residents are assigned night float in half-month blocks, averaging 2 night float rotations per year. Responsibilities are divided between cross-covering patients on floors and admitting new patients. Every morning, night float rounds are conducted where residents present new admissions at the bedside to one of the program leaders.  A review of history and physical exam findings along with management is discussed.  Cross coverage issues and codes are also reviewed during night float rounds.
