ElectivesOur residency program offers electives in both traditional internal medicine sub-specialties as well as other specialized fields. These electives are facilitated by our dynamic volunteer faculty. Electives are available in our faculty practice and private office settings. Residents seeking specialized training not available within the department may pursue their interests at other national and international institutions on a case-by-case basis. All categorical residents participate in the following required rotations during the entire course of their residency: Neurology, Non-Internal Medicine Ambulatory Block (Derm, Ophtho, ENT, Urology & GYN), Internal Medicine Subspeciality Block (Endo, Rheum & HIV), General Internal Medicine Consults, Emergency Medicine, Geriatrics, and Psychiatry. Some of the unique subspecialty electives that are offered in our residency program include: Congestive Heart Failure, Electrophysiology, Developmental Medicine, Hospital Administration, Hematologic Pathology, Renal Transplant Medicine, Hypertension and Practice Tailoring (specialized logitudinal experience based on interest in Womens Health, GIM Private Practice, Pharmaceutical Industry, Managed Care, etc). Electives are available to both interns and residents. First, second, and third year residents average three, four, and five months of elective time respectively. Electives are generally two to four weeks in duration. All electives are free of call and have no weekend obligations. In addition to requesting research blocks, all residents are encouraged to engage in ongoing research on their elective rotations.
