Daily Conferences and Rounds
Board
Review:
These
daily interactive Medical Knowledge Self Assessment Program (MKSAP)-based
study sessions are conducted by the program leadership throughout the
year.
Noon
Report
Noon
report at RWJ and at UMCP is held four times a week at both hospitals.
Discussion of cases focuses on clinical reasoning, directed differential
diagnoses generation, and management. The schedule includes monthly specialty
conferences in Oncology and Cardiology as well as Clinical Pathophysiology
conferences and Morbidity/Mortality conferences.
Night
Float Rounds
Bedside
teaching rounds run by a member of the program leadership are held with
the night float residents and interns to discuss cases admitted overnight.
Teaching
Rounds
Daily
bedside attending rounds are conducted with the entire team, where the
art of history taking and the physical exam are further refined. The challenges
of clinical management, patient outcomes, and a systems based approach
to patient care delivery are discussed.
Noon
Conference
Noon
Conferences are held four- times a week and cover a wide array of general
internal medicine and subspecialty topics which constitute our Science
of Medicine. In July and August of each academic year, the noon conferences
primarily consist of an Emergency Lecture Series. This lecture series
discusses the basic management of clinical emergencies that new interns
are likely to encounter on the wards, as well as practical skills sessions
reviewing basic procedural skills. Noon conference is attended
by all residents and interns at each site (except those in the ICU).
Other
Educational Conferences
Grand
Rounds
With
a mix of both external and local experts, weekly Grand Rounds are conducted
at all sites and cover a variety of topics in both general internal medicine
as well as subspecialties.
Journal
Club
During
this weekly conference at RWJUH, residents select and critically appraise
articles published in major medical journals. This conference, which is
directed by the General Internal Medicine Division, emphasizes in-depth
review of journal articles, the practical application of statistical methods,
and presentation skills. Opportunities like this, as well as the Evidence
Based Medicine (EBM) Course provide residents with the tools to apply
EBM principles to daily patient care.

Critical
Care Journal Club
The
Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division oversees a monthly conference
at UMCP in which a resident presents a seminal paper in critical care
medicine. Such a conference improves the rational care of critically ill
medical patients.
Board
Review Course
In
addition to daily board review, an intensive six day board review course
is offered in May of each year for all graduating residents
Subspecialty
Conferences
Various
conferences, research meetings, and journal clubs are sponsored by our
subspecialty divisions and are available to interested residents.
