Academic Programs

Robert Wood Johnson Medical School offers education and training in a wide range of the biomedical sciences.

Medical Education

The Medical School is dedicated to excellence in medical education and to the development of ethical and culturally competent physicians. The curriculum fosters professional attitudes, the acquisition of clinical skills, and the building of a strong knowledge base. Clinical experiences are introduced early in the first year and students are encouraged toward a lifelong commitment to learning and professional growth.

Graduate Medical Education

The goal of our graduate medical education programs is to provide the highest quality medical care to our patients while educating future generations of physicians. Graduate medical education programs assist physicians in training to develop personal, clinical, and professional competence under the careful supervision and guidance of our faculty and staff. The programs assure appropriate and humane care of patients and the progression of resident physician responsibility consistent with each trainee's demonstrated clinical experience, knowledge and skill. We also make available to resident physicians opportunities to participate in the scholarship of our medical community.

Continuing Medical Education

The RWJMS Division of Continuing and Outreach Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing education for physicians. In addition, a wide array of programs for other health professionals are offered. Please visit the website at http://www.umdnj.edu/ccoe/rwjms/ for more information on our current programs.

Graduate Programs

Piscataway provides an excellent environment for graduate level study of biomedical sciences. In addition to the Research Tower and the new Research Building, there are two interdisciplinary research institutes and the RWJMS campus adjoins the biomedical research campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Together, Rutgers and the Medical School form one vast biomedical research campus. Research opportunities are available in biochemistry, biotechnology, biophysical chemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, virology and cellular immunology. Graduate studies include formal training in one of seven graduate programs: biomedical engineering; biochemistry and molecular biology; molecular genetics, microbiology and immunology;cellular and molecular pharmacology; neuroscience; physiology and integrative biology; and environmental science/exposure assessment. Course work is supplemented by seminars and journal clubs. During the first year, students rotate through three research laboratories before selecting their thesis advisor and thesis research usually begins in the second year. There are also a variety of dual degree programs.

Postdoctoral Programs

Postdoctoral fellows are valued members of the wide-ranging research efforts at the Medical School . Several programs have been initiated in recent years to enhance the academic environment and to improve the training of postdoctoral appointees. Postdoctoral fellows meet each month, with lunch provided, to hear about the research studies of one of their peers.  This is an opportunity for the postdocs of different departments to meet one another, hear about each others' studies, practice a job seminar, or to get feedback regarding ongoing studies. A list of recent seminars can be found at:

Once a semester, there is a special topic relevant to current and future careers in science. It is relatively informal and brimming with spirit from the postdocs on our campus.

The website of the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA), provides a rich array of information and resources for postdocs at the University, including a listing of positions available, career development tools, and University policies and services.
