Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at a Glance

  • As one of the nation’s leading comprehensive medical schools, UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in education, research, health care delivery, and the promotion of community health. In cooperation with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the medical school’s principal affiliate, they comprise New Jersey’s premier academic medical center. In addition, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School has 34 other hospital affiliates and ambulatory care sites throughout the region.
  • As one of the eight schools of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey with 2,700 full-time, part-time and volunteer faculty, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School encompasses 22 basic science and clinical departments, hosts 85 centers and institutes including The Cancer Institute of New Jersey (the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive care center in New Jersey), the Child Health Institute of New Jersey, the Cardiovascular Institute of New Jersey, the Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine (dedicated to molecular medicine), the Clinical Research Center (a clinical pharmacology inpatient facility), the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute (the largest environmental health institute in the world), and the Stem Cell Institute of New Jersey (the nation’s first state-supported stem cell institute).
  • The medical school maintains educational programs at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate levels for more than 1,500 students on its campuses in New Brunswick, Piscataway, and Camden, and provides continuing education courses for health care professionals and community education programs. It has approximately 2,530 staff members on its three campuses.
  • 674 medical students are enrolled at RWJMS.
  • 99% of the enrolled students are New Jersey residents.
  • 55% are women and 15% of the enrolled students are underrepresented minorities.
  • RWJMS welcomed 156 students in the entering class of 2007 out of 3,551 applicants, which is 12% more applications received than the previous year and significantly above the national increase in applications of 2.3%. Six of the students were admitted to the MD/PhD program. Women constitute more than half the students in the incoming class at 58%.
  • RWJMS has approximately 230 graduate students and 31 students in its MD/PhD program.
  • Robert Wood Johnson Medical School sponsors 42 Graduate Medical Education programs which are accredited by either the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).  All of these programs are fully accredited. There are 429 residents in the programs accredited by the ACGME or the ABMS.  There are four additional fellowships for which ACGME or ABMS accreditation is not available.  Continuing medical education programs are conducted on a global basis.
  • RWJMS received nearly $144 million in research grant awards in FY 2007. Funding from the National Institutes of Health doubled over the last five years, to a total of $55 million in 2007.
  • The Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Group, the medical school’s multi-specialty group practice is the largest in New Jersey with more than 600 physician members and 210 specialty clinical programs resulting in approximately
    one million patient visits and medical procedures performed annually.
  • Clinical income for RWJMS in FY 2007 was more than $151 million.
  • RWJMS also provides charitable clinical care to indigent patients at an estimated cost of $38 million annually.
  • Community health is a key priority at RWJMS and one of the four missions of the School. The Eric B. Chandler Health Center, a federally qualified health center that is owned by the medical school, with nearly 56,800 patient annual visits, is one of the only family health centers of its kind in the United States that is supported by a medical school. The Center provides a variety of medical and social services at a single site regardless of patients’ ability to pay. In October 2003, Chandler cared for its 50,000th individual patient.

Accreditation

UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association. The medical school is a full member of AAMC.

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

All education programs of UMDNJ have been approved by the academic, governmental and professional agencies with responsibilities in specific areas of specialization.

The primary and affiliated teaching hospitals of the medical school are accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
